How To Apply Decoupage Tissue Paper
Our Redesign with Prima Decoupage Papers, Tissues, Fibres and Rice Papers offer exceptional detail and quality, making them ideal for transforming any surface. Whether you're working with wood, walls, glass, mirrors or fabrics, our products deliver stunning results when you follow these simple steps.
If you have creases in your paper you could iron these out. Place a tea towel or grease proof paper on top of your decoupage paper and iron lightly.
STEP ONE
Start with a clean, dry surface. If applying decoupage to painted items, wait at least 48 hours for the paint to cure fully — longer in cold conditions as drying times extend.
Clean the surface thoroughly to remove all dust and debris. When decorating painted furniture, select a base paint colour that matches the lightest shade in your design, as the undercolour can show through tissue papers.
STEP TWO
Measure and cut your Decor Tissue Paper to size, or slightly larger depending on your project. Account for pattern matching when calculating how much paper you'll need.
Pro-Tip: For drawer fronts that sit flush together, remove the drawers and lay them on their backs in order (top, middle, bottom). Position them side by side, place your tissue over all surfaces, lightly mark with pencil, then cut carefully along the line. This ensures your pattern aligns perfectly across all drawer fronts.
STEP THREE
Apply a sealing medium such as Redesign Decoupage Matte or Gloss Varnish, or Dixie Belle Clear Coat Sealer, to your project surface.
Position your tissue paper and flatten from the centre outward, pressing out air bubbles for good adhesion. Apply another coat of sealer over the top.
Pro-Tip: Use a Dixie Belle Foam Brush Applicator for even application. Rinse with warm water when finished.
For Rice Papers and fine Tissues, use a sponge to gently press down after applying glue — this eliminates creases without splitting the delicate paper.
Once dry, apply a final coat of sealer. The tissue is fibrous and the sealer will penetrate the fibres, ensuring excellent adhesion.
Pro-Tip: If tissue overhangs the edge once dry, gently sand with a sanding block using downward strokes only — never upward, as this may lift the paper edge.
